Tohoku League Division 1
The 2007 season of the Tohoku League Division 1 got underway on Sunday, although favourites Grulla Morioka were not in action - and neither were promoted side Furukawa Battery. The big winners of the opening round were NEC Tokin, who beat Nippon Steel Kamaishi 3-0 and seem to be showing signs that they want to develop a stronger presence in the region now that 2006 champions TDK SC have moved up to the JFL.

Indeed, the Sendai-based outfit have appointed as assistant coach Masaaki Takada, who left Shizuoka FC following their failure in 2006 to win the Tokai League. In the other two games, FC Primeiro from Fukushima beat last season's strugglers Morioka Zebra 1-0, while the former Sagawa Kyubin Tohoku club, Wiese Shiogama, gained a 2-0 win over their neighbours Sendai Nakata Club. But 2007 is shaping up to be a fight between company side NEC and Grulla.
