Kyushu League - Round 9
The Kyushu League season reached its midway point on Sunday, with a further four fixtures in Kitakyushu to finish off the weekend double header - and there wasn't much doubt as to what the match of the day was, as leaders V Varen Nagasaki scored a vital 2-1 win over challengers Nippon Steel Oita to open up a four-point gap over their rivals. New Wave Kitakyushu have moved into second place after their surprisingly narrow win over Osumi NIFS United and it seems likely that these two teams will battle it out for the title this year. Early leaders Volca Kagoshima meanwhile picked up their first win since round 4 at the expense of Nanakuma Tombies, but relegation-threatened Kaiho Bank SC undid much of the good achieved by their rare triumph on Saturday when they lost to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Nagasaki to slip back into the drop zone.
