With the excitement of the Hokushinetsu League Division 1 title race showing no signs of letting up, the stakes have been raised yet further by two of the participants bringing in international assistance to aid their cause. Zweigen Kanazawa have signed an Argentinian midfielder, Gustavo Ortega, from Buenos Aires-based Club Deportivo Espanol. The 24-year-old, who lists his hobbies as internet chat and reading the Bible, made his debut in Sunday's 3-0 win over Matsumoto Yamaga.

But Nagano Elsa have gone a step further and appointed as coach Valdeir “Badu” Vieira. The Brazilian has been working outside his own country for the last ten years, in Costa Rica, Iran, Oman and most recently Kuwait, where his last job was in charge of the top-ranking Al Arabi club. Given that Nagano have just this last weekend moved to the top of the league, this appointment has to signal a change of gear as far as their ambitions to move up into the JFL and beyond are concerned, potentially tipping the balance in their favour and away from prefectural rivals Matsumoto in terms of the J-League franchise for Nagano prefecture.
