Newly-promoted Viancone Fukushima got a terrific start to life in Division 1 of the Tohoku League, winning their first match 2-0 against Furukawa Battery... but the shock of the Japanese Regional League season so far came at Grulla Morioka, where the hot favourites to retain their championship were held 1-1 by last season's Division 2 (North) title winners, FC Akita Cambiare...

Tohoku League Division 2 (South)
Division 2 (South) of the Tohoku League looks set to be dominated by Fukushima prefecture this year... the club formerly known as FC Perada Fukushima, Fukushima United FC, crushed company side Kureha in their opening match and Soma SC beat a third team from the same prefecture - promoted team Bandits Iwaki - 2-1... perhaps the more fancied of the newcomers, though, are Cobaltore Onagawa from Miyagi, who picked up a superb 4-0 win at near neighbours Marysol Matsushima...

Relegated side Nippon Steel Kamaishi began life in Division 2 (North) of the Tohoku League by winning 2-1 at Aomori's Vanraure Hachinohe in the first fixture of the 2008 season on Sunday... the students of Fuji Club 2003 beat Tono Club in the other match...

Division 1 of the Tohoku League began their new season on Sunday. Champions Grulla Morioka weren't in league action, but last year's runners-up NEC Tokin commenced with a 5-0 thrashing of promoted side FC Akita Cambiare... the shock of the day was at Wiese Shiogama, where the home side were defeated 3-0 by neighbours Sendai Nakata Club...

Tohoku League Division 2 Play-off
Division 2 (North) champions FC Akita Cambiare gained a shock 2-0 win in their play-off with southern counterparts Viancone Fukushima to move up to the Tohoku League Division 1 for 2008. Cambiare, who have dominated their level in recent years without ever being able to make the step up, will replace relegated side Nippon Steel Kamaishi, while Viancone have an additional opportunity to gain promotion when they play off against Morioka Zebra.
